VHSL leadership visits Sherando – The River 95.3

Leadership from the Virginia High School League met with members of the community Monday night at Sherando High School.

Executive Director Billy Haun led off the meeting by giving an overview of the organization.

Then another member of VHSL leadership discussed the passionate topic of alignment and how schools are placed in the various regions.

The VHSL is currently accepting responses for the Strategic Plan Survey and went over some of the results so far.

One of the key points addressed in the survey included sportsmanship and the trend of increasing ejections in various sports from hate speech, violence, or disrespect to officials.

Sports seeing the largest increase in sportsmanship violations include football, baseball, and soccer.

VHSL representatives also discussed the success of the newest sport additions like girls wrestling and esports, and they believe that those sports are here to stay based on the participation numbers.

Leadership alluded to the addition of future sports such as 7-on-7 flag football with the help of funding from the NFL but highlighted the lack of field space in urban areas during the spring.

The VHSL discussed the difficulty in finding suitable venues throughout the evening, especially for state level competitions due to the decreasing availability of the venues and increasing costs.

During the Q&A session, community members brought up the topic of homeschool athletes playing for public schools, inquired about the VHSL’s decision to allow a private school to play in the league, and difficulties of travel for certain regions.
