Birmingham Southern launches international marketing campaign to find potential buyers for campus

Birmingham Southern College’s search for potential buyers of its campus is expanding outside of Alabama. On Tuesday, New York-based real estate brokerage and investment banking firm Keen-Summit Capital Partners LLC revealed that it was working in conjunction with the Birmingham office of JLL in handling the sale of the campus.“This is the premier college campus available for sale in the U.S. right now,” says David Levy, managing director of Keen-Summit Capital Partners LLC. “It would be perfect for a college or university looking to expand or establish a satellite medical, technology, life science or other specialty campus.”The firm described the sale of the campus as a “rare opportunity” to acquire a “world-class, turn-key college at a fraction of the reproduction cost.”They say that Alabama’s “thriving sports culture” would make the campus an “ideal fit for a world-class sports academy and boarding school.”“We are working hard to ensure this campus continues to be an amenity for Birmingham, whether that be with another college user or an adaptive reuse,” BSC President Daniel Coleman said. “As reported, we have interest from local colleges and universities and have also launched a national and international marketing campaign to attract interest from other potential buyers.”BSC announced earlier this year that its doors were closing after being unable to secure funding to continue operating.Less than a month ago, the school reportedly rejected Alabama A&M University’s second offer to purchase the campus. “Our BSC offer was not accepted,” AAMU’s Vice President of Government Affairs & External Relations Shannon Reeves told NBC affiliate WAFF. “With no deal in Birmingham, we will shift our resources to be invested on our main campus in Huntsville as we achieved record enrollment in the 2023-24 academic year.”In June, Miles College confirmed that it had signed a letter of intent to purchase the campus. When asked if that offer is still being considered, Birmingham Southern provided WVTM 13 with the following statement:“BSC continues to have productive discussions with prospective buyers from within Alabama. However, given our responsibility to obtain the best price on the best terms for the campus, we are also open to approaches from outside the state. We will not disclose the details of our interactions with any prospective buyers.”This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
